I am sorry your hotel room was skeevy, that always makes it hard. While I for selfish reasons, wish that you had written, the plays were the most important.
I am sorry it wasn't amazing, but it still sounds worthwhile.
I put up with a whole bunch of crap for way too long because Shakespeare and such were recited and sonnets were written to me. It can be a dangerous thing.
Thanks so much for sharing. It sounds like you needed it. Did you get anything? Maybe you should order the figurine online, if you can?
I don't know if I could deal with the beyond-not-PC-that-is-just-so-wrong, either.
Do you know that I have never seen Our Town? I know, it is embarrassing.
I did write a bit, so there will be fic once I type them up.
The figurine, I had it in my head it was $7.50 and when I went back it was $15, and I thought about it and decided that was too much. I'll be okay. I mostly bought books, at Goodwill, and copies of the plays. I told myself I wouldn't buy anything at all, so it was an okay compromise.
I'd never seen Our Town before either! Although was obviously familiar with it from studying it in school and stuff.
A Midsummer Night's Dream is just one of those plays that can be transformed into almost anything and usually work. Last year I saw an urban Caribbean punk version in one of the parks.
For a moment I wondered if Locke had found a hatch on stage.
That Midsummer's you saw sounds cool! I like that some, if not all, the plays can be transported so easily. Sometimes it just seems like they do it for no reason, you know? So I love it when it works.
Oh, that sounds like so much fun! I used to go to the Cedar City festival, it was the highlight of the summer.
The only version of Midsummer that I haven't like was a version put on by the university, where they tried to make half the the relationships into homosexuals. I think they made Lysander a woman. Problem is, they didn't change the pronouns, which just lead to confusion (was Lysander a cross dresser? A transvestite? Gender confused?) and it just flopped. Making the fairies into "fairies", that's cool.
Why do universities do stuff like that? Mine did, too. Change all the genders, or do a play with only 3 actors playing all the parts (confusing!) or other crazy things. I guess they feel pressure to be innovative because they're a university, but then real world theater is so rarely like that. (and thank goodness!)
That Midsummer Night's Dream looks like the most awesome thing ever. Was Janis Joplin in that van? ;) and the Roman general does look like Locke, indeed.
It's great to know you had a good time (even with the hotel room business.. err, that's gross indeed :/). And I envy you on next year's schedule, I haven't seen either of those plays performed and I'd love to. Macbeth especially.

I've been longing to see MacBeth performed ever since I read it. I'm so excited at the prospect.
