The first time most of them saw Jack was in the line to check in at the airport. A man in a suit with a raised voice, making a fuss. Sawyer couldn't help casing him, the suit and the expensive watch. But he also saw the defeated sag to the man's shoulders as he walked away, and the way he very gently shielded his eyes with his hand, as though the light hurt him and the world was too much to bear.
The second time he saw Jack was in the airport bar. Sawyer ordered a drink but the taste of it choked him. Reminded him of that poor sloshed sap, which took him back to that dark road in the rain. He wasn't sure he would've gone back without that encouragement, that drunken bravado, that cynical voice questioning whether it would ease his suffering. He thought about stopping, parking himself next to this guy, but then he saw a chick moving on the man, so Sawyer pushed off and stalked angrily to the boarding area.
It's hard to remember the third time he saw Jack. It was on the beach, after the crash. Everything was screaming and fire, confusion and chaos, and he was dizzy. But Jack was steady on his feet and ever calm.
The next time, Jack put his hands on Sawyer. Pulling him away from Sayid, a fight Sawyer started because they were all getting thirsty and bored and complacent. He'd seen people looking at him like he might be okay, like he might be trustworthy, like he might be a regular guy. There was one savage moment when he thought he might be able to fool them, but Sawyer knew he'd never been that great a con man.
He remembers the times after that, too. He recounts them in his mind, though he doesn't number them. He's not sure why, exactly. He just doesn't want to forget.
