This reminds me of "Writing Truth," with Sawyer alone and immersed in books. "Writing Truth" is one of my top three favorites of yours, so that means I really love this one. :) But I agree with Kath, there is so much unsaid and that's very "you," leaving it up to the reader to make of it what they will. Very Margaret Mitchell-ish of you, letting us decide where the story goes from there. (Again, that's a compliment, the unresolved ending of Gone With the Wind is my all-time favorite ending -- and NO, I will never read the sequel because I think it besmirches the integrity of the original to tack on closure where it was not intended). I love the ambiguity of Desmond's motives, and I loved Sawyer figuring out that things weren't totally on the up-and-up and very Sawyer-ish-ly stomping his foot and saying "Get." This was a totally intriguing fic that I'll be thinking about for a while. And just to give this fb a Sawyer-ish ending, I am stomping my foot about your Mood. :P

Love you. :D

I definitely came at this with "Writing Truth" in mind somewhat. I love the idea of writer-Sawyer so much that I would love to revisit it sometime and really do it justice. Which didn't really happen here, but it was still fun.

I hadn't thought of other open endings when I left this one open, but you make a wonderful point. (And the sequel was HORRIFIC, you are right to stay away.)

Sawyer? A bookman? An I'm-an-entirely-new-person librarian? As much as I enjoy the idea, let me remain doubtful. ;)

What I liked the most was the way he perceived Desmond. Now, Desmond could be the air I breathe but I must admit he might seem strange to other people. Or even crazy. And he does here to Sawyer.

"I want to be your friend, bookman," Desmond said. - hell, hearing that and there, I would be scared. Priceless.

The ending is good. One cannot con a conman, it seems, yet Sawyer lets go. It's his another life after all.

I think I'm not getting through what I wanted to say. I need coffee.

Do you mind if I friend you? I'm getting tired of coming across your fic just by chance.

Oh, feel free to be doubtful. It does seem unlikely that Sawyer would ever change, or if he did, change so much.

One cannot con a conman, it seems, yet Sawyer lets go. It's his another life after all.

You are a brilliant reader, and made me so happy by saying this.

Please do friend me, I'd be delighted. :) I will friend you back.

Sawyer working in a library is a brilliant idea and it boggles me that no one has thought of that until now! You're amazing.

I know others have quoted this already, but I simply have to reiterate its wonderfulness:

Desmond went. He left his library books on the table and walked calmly and straight-shouldered out of the cafe. Sawyer didn't have to reach down into his bag to know his notebook was gone. He wondered what Desmond would make of the things written in it, and knew he hadn't seen the last of him.

I like that Sawyer so easily reads what Desmond is about, how he's keeping track of everyone. Makes me wonder if everyone else knows what Desmond is doing or if Sawyer is the only one sharp enough to realize it, just like he immediately knows Desmond took his book. Sawyer seems to get such a good read on people's motives most of the time and you captured that so perfectly here.

Isn't Sawyer in a library fun? I was trying to think of ways to play off of Sawyer and Desmond having reading in common, and when I thought of that, I had to write it.

I'm glad you liked it. You're right, about Sawyer. He sizes up people really well, whether that's from being a con man or just how he is and that helped him to be a con man in the first place. Probably some of both.

I really like the idea of this, it's a unique idea and that's such a refreshing thing to read. And I'm intrigued by what Desmond will find in Sawyer's notebook and what he will do with it. I also really love the idea of Sawyer retreating into books and working in a library - that makes so much sense to me.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you thought it worked for Sawyer to retreat into books, I liked the idea of that so much.
