English translation:

Dear Emilie,

Of course I will help you, and not only because I owe your father more than I will ever be able to repay--as you said, we are family, after all. I got a shock when I found your letter in the book the boy gave me, but it was not entirely a surprise, either. I knew that you would try to contact me sooner or later.

Do not worry yourself about Magdalena. I do not know her particularly well, but I know enough about her to be able to assure you that she poses no threat. You should rather be wary of Ditlevsen. I do not dare to say too much in this letter, but you have to trust me. Do not tell him more than trivial things, and know that he understands more than one would think.

You think that people are trying to keep something from you, you say. Let me assure you that you are completely right; you are probably more right than you yourself understand. Your father's death had greater consequences than I could have imagined back then, and it is the opinion of several people that you should be the last to know them. I will explain this further, but not here.

It was not wise of you to contact me, but it is too late to do anything about that now. We can only communicate through letters, as anything else is too great a risk. You can give your letters to Alfred Kaalblom in your philosophy class; I will tell him to sit behind you so you can pass them under the benches. You can trust him.

Burn this letter once you have read it, please. I have done the same with yours.
