I drove.

I drove all over the westside, for two hours. I mostly drove without help, although Jose, my kindly older driving instructor, did grab the wheel and engage his passenger-side brake/accelerator many times during the lesson. I got noticeably more comfortable with the concept as the lesson went on, although I remain terrified of left-hand turns, and I ( Read more... )

"a gay!" I love it!

My friend's exboyfriend used to refer to me that way when talking to my friend about me: "Liz? Is that the gay who sees men?"

"Yes, Eduardo. She's bi."

"She's a gay until she marries a man."

That's a very interesting way of looking at matters. I wonder what makes one bi person "straight" and another "a gay" in people's eyes? It can't just be adherence to heteronormative values, right? Although I've had many people tell me, confidentially, "I know you're not really a lesbian."

It really is fascinating (and frustrating), isn't it?

And you know we had the little chat about bis today after he insisted his niece was "straight." Um.....

I read that as "I drove all over the website"

I was sure confused.

congratulations on successful driving. i'll probably be taking lessons in a week or two myself. thank you for being a brave trail blazer. i'll try to think of your success as i freak out at the thought of having to drive.

it's funny how being "a gay" is such a novelty in west l.a. poor jose must not get out much.

Well, that's what was so weird. Once he started mentioning his niece....he then disclosed that he lived with her in a West Hollywood apartment! Surrounded by the gays on all sides! I am thinking he was shoked by my complete refusal to fit any of the stereotypes about the gays that his WeHo years apparently formed for him. We'll see if he tells me anything tomorrow?

And thank you for the good thoughts. I DEFINITELY advise getting the lessons with the special car. It makes a world of difference knowing that you can't really botch things too badly because the instructor will just step on the brakes and grab the wheel. You can do it!!!

I have considerable lack of trust in my own ability to drive, so this is definitely needed. By the end of the lesson, it was maybe 80% me controlling the car.

Jose suggests that I schedule a driving test for June 20th. I hate to disappoint him, but I can't imagine being ready by then. But we'll see, we'll see!

Also, the neighbors are really excited to meet you. There may be a didge-uke-guitar-off some night!

" So, do you think a gay is born or made? " Wow. Poetic. This sentence spoken out loud sounds so oblivious to me.

Yep. It was like, the Greatest Hits. I could have possibly timed the delivery of certain phrases and concepts to the nanosecond. Wow. I'd be like, "Oh, now I bet he's gonna say something about how he is tolerant of the gays" and a second later, I'd hear "Now me, I believe in Live and Let Live!"
