a couple of nights back, i was invited to attend a church mass-slash-concert type thing; it's still a toss-up whether i was more surprised than my cousin when i said yes. to expand, it also works for sports fans. i was trying to explain to someone talking shit about pop music and teenyboppers how the sense of fulfillment is EXACTLY THE SAME as what he got from sports games, and he just wasn't biting. at that point i decided i wouldn't bring the religion part into it, cause then it would just get weird. but i still believe me. the feeling at concerts is the same as at churches is the same as at mosques is the same as at NYE at times square is the same as football games IS THE SAME

always the same.

There is sooo much that could be said about religion as fandom, but let me just say that I'm sorry you had an unfortunate experience and don't engage with the fen in regards to religion, it will never end well.
