I devoured all of Xanthe's SGA fiction, and when I was through with that (twice) I started watching NCIS for the sole purpose of being able to understand her NCIS fiction ;) As I've never watched a single X-files episode in my life (and have no desire to), I always shied back from her X-files works.
Your rec encouraged me to read the 24/7 story anyway, and it's FANTASTIC so far, you're right, you don't need a lot of knowledge of the series.
