My sister discovered this past week that she has leukemia. We are fortunate in that she found out early, but it looks like that she may still need a bone marrow transplant ( Read more... )

This looks relevant:

http://www.healemru.com/registries.php

In particular:

Hungary
Hungarian Bone Marrow Donor Registry
National Medical Centre
Institute of Haematology and Immunology
Dioszegi u. 64
H-1113 Budapest
Hungary
Email: rajczy@csvdonor.hu
Telephone: +36-1-466-7020

(Don't remember what fraction of your genome you said comes from those parts...)

Hope everything turns out for the best

Thanks, this could be quite helpful. Dad's side of the family is all Hungarian.

Turns out that hukuma and I are both ineligible to be donors. Here are also a list of medical reasons that would make someone ineligible to donate. Hmm; I'm not sure about me. I might be able to for some time still until my own genetics kick in and make me ineligible. That's less clear for me. But I'm pregnant right now so all I could do is register but they would mark me as deferred or something, if they accepted me.

Actually, folks should look more closely at that list. It's more of a FAQ than a list of exclusions. Clicking through on many of those "conditions" leads to text stating that the condition does not prohibit one from registering.

Agreed. It is less clear for me whether I can or not but very definite for hukuma that he cannot:

"All other forms of cancer, including non-in situ melanoma, are not acceptable - no matter the length of time since treatment or recovery."

Some of the reasons are utter bullshit and should be ignored. I am unable to donate officially because I've engaged in gay sex (in the last five years) and thus am "high risk" by their standards.

Anonymous donations for the win!

I signed up for BeTheMatch about 6 months ago when a co-workers' friend fell ill. I encourage everyone to consider joining. There's no charge, and you can save a life.

I hope your sister has a match. Wishing you and your entire family the best.

Thank you! Glad to hear you're already in the system - the lead time on this test is nerve wracking.

Oh mate, that sucks a lot.

In the UK you can sign up for the Bone Marrow Register through the Anthony Nolan Trust:

I can't donate blood or bone marrow due to MS being auto-immune. I wish that I could.

Thinking about you and your sister. I hope that you're a match. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the link. No worries about not being able to donate, it's just good to hear from you.

I'll LJ more about this as it goes on, but probably in friends locked posts. Right now it's not 100% clear what is the status so I am trying to hold off until I have more specific information.
