I want to kick bad journalists.

A pathetic piece of "journalism."

Basically, it's a piece about preparations for the Lord of the Rings musical that's coming out next March. (Do musical productions really take this long to prepare? They've been working on this thing for, like, three years now.) Normally, I'd be excited - heck, I already am, although it's premiering in Toronto and ( Read more... )

journalism, rant, anger-frustration, whining

There's no writing. It's composed of a string of quotes, tied together with some worthless sentences like "It's a style of work to which producer Kevin Wallace could obviously become happily accustomed."

Eeek! ^^; This is what I'm always worried about with my stuff--that there's just not enough writing in there.

That's one of the few drawbacks of recording interviews - you tend to fill up your article with quotes. In retrospect, I kinda like what I did with my profile of Joe Kendall (in an early issue, during our soph. year)... I walked in with no tape recorder and only scribbled some notes and maybe three or four winner quotes on a piece of paper I snitched from the library printer. I thought the end result was pretty cr*ppy, but apparently it was good and interesting enough that the editors put it on the back page, where everyone would be sure to read it.

Of course, there are some pieces that should have a higher percentage of quotes. But regardless of what the piece covers, the ratio of paraphrases to quotes should always be, at most, three to two. And even that's exceptionally high.

1. Boycotting the musical itself would be too late; it's already well underway.

2. That website has nothing to do with the musical:Our campaign is not targeted at the stage production of Lord of the Rings, which we fully support. Rather, it is meant to highlight the staggering hypocrisy of both the City and the province, which both pat themselves on the back for the time, money and resources they put into landing this production while they continue to ignore the concerns of tenants, who are languishing in squalor.
