Well, there's the obvious, but I've talked a lot about BtVS in this meme, so let's talk about Battlestar Galactica.
I don't exactly know why I was so anti-BSG at first. I mean, I like sci-fi. There was a time when my entire Friday night was spent watching the SciFi Channel (Sliders, Farscape and First Wave). But military shows, big space battles, and technobabble aren't really my thing, and I think I had this idea that Battlestar Galactica was another Star Trek or Stargate... neither of which I've seen, so who the hell knows how I came up with the idea I wouldn't like it.
Anyway, I kept hearing great things about it, so I rented the DVDs. I wasn't too thrilled with the miniseries, but the first episode ("33") had me totally hooked. I was just so impressed with how far they were willing to push these characters, at how enormous the stakes were. Plus, I kind of have a post-apocalyptic story kink. :) I loved how dark it was, and I was particularly pleased to see that it wasn't about an alien of the week. It was a story about survival, and a lot of the conflict was about the characters, who seemed just as richly developed as anyone I'd find on my favorite shows. And, as we all know, having characters I can love is half the battle right there. :)
I was actually not that interested in the religious mythology - I could've done without Roslin's dreams and prophecies and Kara's special destiny, or knowing the significance of "This has all happened before, and it will all happen again," which is perhaps why I wasn't bothered by the lack of resolution for a lot of those things in the finale. The speculation surrounding the Final Five and the connections to Kobol and Earth, and whether it would connect to our Earth drew me in somewhat, but I was always watching primarily to spend time with the characters, and that, I felt, was rewarded.
Honorable Mentions: BtVS, AtS, Friday Night Lights, Veronica Mars, Doctor Who, and Parks & Recreation. When I think about it, there are a LOT of shows I think I'm not going to like, and then usually someone convinces me it's awesome, and it turns out it is, and all is good in the world.
