Bikes!

Hello all!

I'm switching to a more green way to get around. A bike of course!

Think mountain bike capabilites, with the cuteness of a city bike.

Does anyone know of a brand or two that would fit those characteristics?

Walmart has some great cruisers (schwinn), I wouldn't put them into the off road/trail capacity but definitely can handle a dirt road.
Craigslist usually has a few up depending on your area, generally much cheaper too.

Though the cruisers are great to look at, most are heavy bikes and suck if you actually need to ride a distance...

I have a Novara Fusion, it's a touring bike that can handle commutes and off road. The Novara Safari would also be along the lines of what you're looking for. They're both available at REI. I'd try heading in to one and talking to someone in the bike area. They usually know what they're talking about and can make suggestions. They'll even arrange a test ride most of the time.

Surly is a great brand that somewhat fits that bill. Also, I love, love, love the Jamis brand of bikes.

Do you live near an REI? They've got their own line of bikes that are great, too. I just read the comments and saw that susitna_sol said the same thing. So I second the Novara line. :)
