Apple isn't perfect but the newer laptop models are a lot better than in the past in terms of eliminating mercury and brominated fire retardants. Power management is also excellent so you use less electricity over the life of the machine (unless you get sucked into playing all the time on the computer).
Of course, make sure your old computer gets properly recycled. You could also look around for a good used machine. Carefully assess your needs. Maybe you don't need a big tower, maybe you do. Maybe a 3 year old is good enough, maybe you need the latest hardware because you are doing development.
True dat yo! I dibble and dapple on the computer but it's main use for me is for papers, research, and the much needed trip to cuteoverload.com. As for getting it recycled I'm already in talks with my professor Joel Tickner (sweetest/coolest environmental professor on the planet) on the best place to recycle in my area.
