I think you're actually understating things in a way. Think about another industry which advertises perhaps even heavier than the auto industry... The insurance industry.
I agree that our society has been marketed for almost 80 years on the concept of "independence through personal vehicle ownership." That's a difficult concept, now, to combat. It's deeply rooted into the American idea, along with apple pie, manifest destiny, and white picket fences
