I have to share a Wal-Mart story. I have been an avid Wal-Mart hater for as long as I can remember, hopefully a lot of you feel the same ( Read more... )

It was raining. Cut them a little slack.

It's far more important that we get people to stop accepting bags in the first place. Even stores that do collect bags for 'recycling' often toss out anyway because some idiot throws in a dirty bag that contaminates the lot.

Aww...do I have to cut Wal-Mart shoppers some slack? :/

What constitutes a dirty bag?

I'm no lover of Wal-Mart but some people truly can't afford to shop elsewhere. Go ahead and protest overconsumption in general and Wal-Mart's tactics in particular but I would be careful about attacking the shoppers.

Bags that been leaked in by groceries are perhaps the most common contaminators. The recyclers only want bags back that show no signs of use other than being rumpled or stretched. Stores can't be bothered to sort out a few dirty bags from the clean majority so once they see a dirty bag they are likely to throw out the whole batch.

On the topic of bags, my local chain just switched to a biodegradable corn based bag. While it's a better choice, I still say we should avoid them because they don't break down right away which means they still create unsightly litter, still choke and starve animals who ingest them, still encourage a disposable mentality, still block drains and exacerbate flooding, etc.

Yeah...I am being a little mean. However, the people I know who shop at Wal-Mart are very well off. When I'd drop off my bags, I'd see plenty of cars of the BMW, Mercedes, Lexus varieties. I don't know...the whole topic in general irks me.

Can I ask why you hate Wal-Mart? I mean, God knows I'm not fond of them, but we buy a good bit of our groceries there every week, and I don't think I have a real reason to hate them. (Luckily though, we bought like 25 reuseable bags, so we don't even touch the plastic ones!)

Not trying to be a smartass, just wondering!

My dad has trucked for grocery stores that have been shut down when Wal-Marts have moved in. He taught me from an early age to support the little guys rather than places like Wal-Mart. And on top of his teachings, I have just heard so many horror stories about that place.

Google it. I guarantee you'll find countless articles about why you should dislike Wal-Mart.

I understand where you're coming from... that would peeve me, too.

But those ladies could have taken a new bag from the store instead, and didn't. And for all you know, they'll bring the bag back to the store when they're done with it.

Maybe I have too much faith in people :c) But hearing stories about people like you who pick up trash that isn't theirs doesn't help me lose faith in humanity, either.
