I think a lot of that is Adam Baldwin. Like, I'm guessing Tim Minear wrote this role for him after Firefly... he even manages to have his character casually mention in a throwaway line in the pilot a background in the Marines.

TASH, YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS SHOW! I have spotted 2 sneaky references to Whedon shows, & I bet there are more that I missed -- in one episode, a guard's shirt identifies him as being from "Wolfram Security" and in another episode, a film playing at the cinema is "Once More with Feeling".
