There's something of a trend in which generally, one half of the pairing will be rough and tumble and the other half will be more refined. I'm not familiar with all the pairings, but Merlin/Arthur, Nate/Eliot, and Mal/Simon are probably the best examples. Carter/Stark (if I've got the characters correctly at least), John/Rodney, Eliot/Alec are similar, though not as polar as the other examples... And technically the muscle-ish aspect is inverted in Merlin/Arthur... but yeah. :)

Someone else already mentioned this, but there's a kind of rough/genteel (ish) theme, I think? I'm not too familiar with many of them, so... yeah.

Oh, and one of them tends to be more of a 'master' figure- higher-ranking, whether that's at work or otherwise. At least, that's the case for the ones I recognise...
