So, when I was flying back from Tucson, all the instrumentation on the plane went haywire. They had a backup system, but they had to turn around to Houston and get another plane since they didn't want to fly on their backups ( Read more... )

I've started to notice that this is the general layout of all small planes produced within the last ten to fifteen years. Two multi-purpose screens showing digital information, with the necessary instrumentation (from top to bottom: horizon, airspeed, altitude) in analog form running down the middle so that they can still land the plane with a complete power failure. I'll bet there was a digital readout (a la those big seven-segment anode displays) showing heading on top of the instrument panel ( ... )

The plane was an ERJ, if that matters.

The Christmas Tree! You must have been in Endeavour. =) That was my favorite Mission Control to operate when I worked there, because I could pull the Christmas Tree on the trainees. ;)

They're not really having that bad of problems -- nothing has actually gone wrong. Planes have so many doublechecks and redundancies built in...

yeah, but it doesn't help my confidence when this happens after my last flight back here the plane's door wouldn't close properly.
