Rei just watches from a little ways away. She doesn't see the point of this exercise but...well. Maybe that's just her inexperience with all things normal?

Anyway, she remembers her classmates having painted fingernails, and it's something to at least know how it was done.

George is pretty meticulous about her nail polishing. She rarely has to do any clean-up, but it's always kind of hard to reach her toes. She's just reaching for her bottom of nail polish remover when she is suddenly struck by the feeling that someone's watching her.

...Oh, hey. Someone is watching her.

"Um. Hi." She can't help but straighten up a little, uncomfortable. How long was this chick just staring? Geez. "Do you...want me to do your nails or...something?"

"Why?" The question is more broadly applicable than just asking why she would want her nails done. She doesn't understand the appeal of painting one's nails in the first place.

[akapeanut]

George crinkles her brow. "Uh...well I can let you do them yourself to. I just...thought it's more fun to do each others. Maybe a little easier too. But uh, if you'd rather just borrow some...."

Rei moves a little closer. That didn't answer her question, but maybe she can figure it out for herself if she participates.

"I don't know how."

"Um, then I can show you, if you want." Man, what is it about this place? Did everyone here come from places where nail polish was never invented?

"Do you...know what color you want? We could do blue to match your, um, hair."

"Okay." Rei moves over to sit within arms length of George. Looking at George's yellow toenails, she remembers the whole "introducing yourself" thing and somewhat awkwardly adds, "I am Rei."

[akapeanut]

"I'm George. Uh, give me your hand."

George settles Rei's left hand on her own thigh and opens the bottle of polish, starting on her index finger first. Hm, she better explain it some, huh?

"See you just kind of, um, wipe off the excess on the bottle and then...start in the middle of the nail..." Brush brush brush. "Such a pretty color, um, right?"

Rei nods slightly, watching George's motions. Blue is her favorite.

"Why do you do it?"

That is a good question. Hmm. "I guess because it's...nice. Pretty. You can pick colors that match your outfit. Or, uh, in your case, your hair."

She moves on to Rei's middle finger. "You really haven't had your nails painted before?

Rei shakes her head slightly.

"At school, the girls did it."

[akapeanut]

"Yeah. I mean, I guess I'm not a girly-girl or anything. I don't wear makeup, really. But...nail polish is fun." George glances up at the girl. Yeah, she's not wearing makeup. Her hair is dyed (well, George is assuming she dyed it) but other than that they appear to be on the same page when it comes to the girly0girl thing.

Maybe they'll hit it off. If either of them can talk enough.

"Um...what do you do for fun around here?"

Rei keeps her eyes on her nails, either engrossed in the painting process or embarrassed by being asked to talk about herself. It's hard to tell when her face is totally neutral.

"Read books. Or swim."

[akapeanut]

"Yeah, I uh, found the library the other day. It's pretty cool." George gestures for Rei to give her her other hand and starts painting again. "My dad was an English professor. Kind of made it hard not to like reading."

She glances up at Rei. "What kind of stuff do you read?"

Rei obediently gives her other hand up, still keeping her eyes down.

"Biochemistry. Religion. Physics."

[akapeanut]

Why is she being so shy? Sure, her mom said she could be intimidating sometimes, but George was actually making a fucking effort here! She can't be that scary, right?

"Uh...am I...making you uncomfortable?"
