The Doctor looks up before Jack even reaches the door.
He's in the midst of re-reading Great Expectations, much to his own chagrin. Of course, he had started off looking through the library for information on the nature of this strange place--at the very least, the works of Lewis Carroll begged for a closer reading--when he'd stumbled upon Dickens. Being much more fond of Dickens than before, having been saved by him not long ago in Cardiff, the Doctor naturally was excited when he stumbled upon a copy of the famous book. To say he had become distracted was almost an understatement; the Doctor, even in his most plain and simple incarnations, had a weakness for "shiny things," and it is difficult to get shinier than the most famous work of a man known for his purple prose

Jack forces a grin onto his face as he hears the Doctor's voice. He can tell he's feeling uncomfortable, but at least he's trying. The least he can do is hide how much the Doctor's tone hurts him. He's already told him it wasn't his fault, and he truly believes it wasn't. There's no need to give him any more of a reason to feel guilty if he can help it.
Jack's own smile becomes less forced as the Doctor's shows sincerity, and at finally having the chance to see his friend like this once more.
"What? No hug?" Jack says, trying for faux hurt. But for now all his voice can convey is relief, and happiness at the chance of meeting this Doctor again.
((Don't worry about it; my own rl will probably slow me down a bit tonight too. I'll probably be completely AFK from 7:30-9:30 (GMT). And damn, you're making me want to reread Great Expectations.))
"I wanted to see you first," the Doctor says, the nerves melting out of his voice. "You look fantastic." In three dimensions. The fourth is horrifying, but the Doctor isn't going to say that, or let himself notice it. It's Jack! Jack, smiling from behind that frown.
The Doctor throws open his arms for a hug and hopes that Jack will just talk, so he can hear that warm voice again. Jack and Rose almost convinced him that he'd lived through however long it was that they'd been apart... and even though it's only been days, it's like a reunion after forever.
So the Doctor goes for a bear hug, overpowering the sense of wrongness about Jack almost entirely in his mind.
((OOC: After this I'm going to disappear for at least four hours for papers, meetings, food, etc., although there's a chance I might get done with some of that early. He returns the Doctor's hug with equal force, almost unable to believe he's really there.
"Oh God, Doctor... you have no idea how good it is to see you again." Jack tells him, voice not quite a whisper. He hasn't let go of him yet, he can't quite bring himself to.
((Alright- I'll probably not be around Friday till pretty late. I'm not so sure about Saturday either. Looks like we're going to have to go for really slow logging? ^_^;))
"Well, there is the other me, right? I'm sure you'd run into him again," the Doctor says, not entirely sure if it's true. "But... I'm glad the three of us got to be together again. Even though, to me, the two of you never left."
The Doctor smiles, slightly sad.
((OOC: hahaha, I'm such a ditz! I thought I started the thread. Please forgive my stupidity))
Jack's smile tightens, as he shakes his head. "Maybe I will, but I left him so I could go back to my team. So I'm not so sure."
His smile becomes more genuine as he speaks again. "I'm glad the three of us got to be together again too. Like I said; I never thought I'd see either of you again. I'm glad I've had this chance."
((It's alright, I do stuff like that all the time!))
"Me too. You'd think an old thing like me would get more second chances, but..." The Doctor sighs. "Suddnely, I've got an overabundance." Then he grins. "You and Rose and I should just go nosing around this place, just for old times' sake. It'd be fantastic!"
Jack returns the Doctor's grin, more than happy with that arrangement. "Sounds like a fun day. Maybe we'll even find an alien invasion or two to stop."
