I'm in Las Vegas, Nevada. I've been finding these green caterpillars in my garden every couple days or so. Though I found one munching a watermelon flower and another on a cantaloupe leaf, all the rest have been on the sunflowers that are planted in a line behind the melon patch so I think perhaps those two fell. My friend came across this insect today and we were wondering what it might be. It was about 5 cm long. Comparing the pictures with different hornets pictures, we found similarities with the vespa mandarinia. Is this correct?
