I think he was just asking it to ask it. He doesn't like long silences when someone who isn't Al is around. LOOK AT ME MAKING ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT THE CHARACTERS. AREN'T I PRETENTIOUS. That or he was trying to one up Envy by catching him off guard and getting him to answer.

Not a very smart plan. Envy tends to rage when Ed finds out anything about him/what he feels.
