MISSION POST: Bridge - Day 48 - Open [Also for comms]

Sep 26, 2010 20:21

As the various away teams made their way to shuttle bay or airlock, shift was changing on the bridge. The faces taking over were not, for the most part, the usual suspects. Many of the regulars on the bridge had ended up on one team or another; the current shift was a makeshift sort of thing. And with any luck it would be a quiet shift, broken only ( Read more... )

"All but shuttlecraft Copernicus have launched, Sirrr," M'Ress responded without hesitation. By now, she'd become more accustomed to her expanded duties on the bridge. The added responsibilities were sometimes anxiety-producing, but Shiboline kept reminding herself that they were a sign of confidence in her from her superiors. Slowly, she'd begun to ease into her new role, and now she felt much less doubt in her own abilities.

"Copernicus is set to launch in five minutes. Last report stated all systems nominal, pprrb."

"Good," she replied; "Monitor the situation and inform us of any changes." If all went to plan the mission would be a routine one. Exactly what this young crew needed to build their confidence.

It was shaping up to be a slow day at the helm. With the ship in standard orbit, there was no real need for a navigator; the computer would take care of keeping the ship on course. And, of course, there was the fact that most of the regular bridge crew was off having some grand adventure on the planet below. At least, Chekov liked to imagine they were having some grand adventure. It was just a pity he couldn't be part of it.

"Nawigation reports no change," he announced, his tone perhaps a shade regretful. He'd have liked something to break the monotony of flying around in a circle all day.

"Aye, Sirrrr," M'Ress responded and kept monitoring the channels for remarkable activity. This was her first actual mission while attending a Bridge post, so everything was exciting to her. As she waited for a report of launch from the last shuttle craft, however, she did feel some waning in that excitement. Her attention was focused, but five minutes was taking a long time to pass.

She listened to other reports and caught the tone of their navigator. Studying the way Ensign Chekov bunched up his shoulders and dropped his head, she guessed that he was growing bored too. It was odd how Human's expressed boredom with body tension. A nap or a stretch seemed so much more sensible. Most Humans, however, enjoyed conversation during dull moments. Commander Creed was a firm leader, but she did not seem unsociable.

To stimulate conversation, M'Ress asked, "How long do you think the survey will take?" She looked to the Commander because she obviously knew more about the mission. The question was open to everyone, though.
