Engineering Deck - Gamma Shift (Day 3) - Open

Aug 19, 2009 00:54

This close to the main drive, the deck vibrated under your feet in time to the heartbeat of the ship - an all-pervasive sound more felt than heard. Everywhere was the unmistakeable steady hum of moving parts in perfect harmony. It was pleasant spending time in the Engineering Decks with everything in working order and no looming disaster. It was quiet. Scotty enjoyed taking Gamma shift: with most of the crew in their beds - or someone's beds, anyway - he could get some alone-time with the beautiful ship he was apparently responsible for now.

(That was still a little surreal. He'd gone from exile on a frozen outpost to being chief engineer of the Fleet's flagship. Part of him was still waiting for the punchline.)

He was already getting used to the quirks of both the ship and her crew - from the tendency environmental controls had to go haywire when they were running at high warp, to the still under the heat exchangers that he would deny knowing anything about if questioned. And he had another five years to pick up on everything else.
