Computer Sciences Lab & Starbase - Day 26 - Private/Finished

Nov 23, 2009 00:31

Paperwork and organizing and supervising and emergency response outlines and dealing with the dumbest ensigns ever to join Medical and… Christine had to stop thinking about it or else she would explode. This was the closest thing to a shore leave they were apt to get for a while, and she was determined to not let her whole time be spent worrying ( Read more... )

He started, as he always did with the nurse snuck up on him.

"Can you not look it up? We have a computer system with an immense amount of basic information on whatever the hell it is that you intend to ask me. Just because I happen to be mildly more available because, hell forbid, you expend energy to bring up a program or ask the sophisticated AI what the next logical step in your proof could possibly be, a skill you should have learned in your first years at the academy, that doesn't mean that my brain is your personal--" Donnie started not looking up from his computer but before his voice could get any higher a science department ensign shouted his name. He looked up. "What!...how did you get over there?"

The ensign pointed sheepishly at Christine and Donnie turned his head the other way and up into her eyes.

"Christy! Hi! Wh-what are you doing here?" he said, his voice completely different in tone as before, perhaps a little guilty.
"Christy!"

"Hello, Donnie." Christine wiggled her fingers in a little wave, laughing. Always a character, that's for sure. "You have a appointment for treatment that needs to be kept, mostly because I'm not in the mood to change it."

Oh, certainly, she could put this first experimental round of desensitization therapy off for another day. She could go back to work and write up a medical file annotation on how Doctor Beck's agoraphobia ought to be treated, but also how it didn't really concern her. She could also go stir-crazy and stop caring about anything but the strictest definitions of her job. But that wasn't apt to happen any time soon.

Leaning against a table - and likely looking too horrendously casual to be taken seriously - she added, "Under my orders, you're off for the rest of the day."

The lightness of his face, because Donnie wasn't apt to smile, disappeared. His mouth hung open and he furrowed his brows.

"Are you kidding? The rest of the day?," Donnie said, not filtering his aggravation, because he wasn't apt to do that, either. He then gave a furious whisper. "Do you have any idea the peons they've put me in here with? They have absolutely no idea how to conduct any sort of--" He held his breath as he caught Christy's look. He put the finger that was making a point, and his point, down abruptly.

He scooted his chair with the back of his knees as he rose. He drummed his fingers on the table before he approached her. He didn't say anything but had the distinct look that said "Let's just get this over with."

In the time they'd known each other, it had become apparent that Donnie's catalogue of expressions wasn't much like anyone else's. His smiles weren't easily-defined as such, and his little annoyed looks spoke volumes. This particular brand of the former, while definitely one worth taking seriously, only served to make Christine more focused in her quest for the two of them to enjoy their afternoon. And when one's quest was for fun, the accompanying emotions tended to result in very unprofessional giggles.

Quirking her head towards the door through which she had just entered, Christine folded her arms across her chest and asked, "Shall we get going, then?"
