Mornings weren't something that Schuyler liked, even if they weren't true mornings. On a ship there was no sun rising and falling, but there was simulated day and night and unfortunately Schuyler found she still disliked mornings even when they were simulated ( Read more... )

God, he hated mornings. The only thing worse were fake mornings. Three days into the voyage now, and Leonard still wasn't adjusting to Life in the Can. He was resolved to not drinking himself to sleep this time, and he still didn't want to hypo up. Really, there was nothing for it. It was a contest of wills.

Too bad he was pitted against his own.

Leonard showed up in Mess for coffee, and coffee alone. While yesterday's lunch had ended up interesting, and Jim's presence always settled his unease with space, he was less sure today about his sociability. And there might not be a Jim to rescue him this time. Leonard started to turn back to the door when he spotted a familiar brunette head. Cavendish. Well, she was a pistol and a half, but she never bothered him none. In fact, they got along great, in a professional sense at least.

Leonard hesitated, remembered he had a report that might be of some interest to her, then proceeded cautiously with a deliberately relaxed smirk in place. It still kinda hurt.

He wasn't disappointed by the wait. Sky was intelligent and funny. She was also damn cute when riled. "Well, at least technology doesn't steal the covers and put its cold feet right on the back of your legs."

For the record? He hated that.

Leonard's snickering kinda fizzled into embarrassed -- kinda, mind you -- hiccups of chuckles. Damn but she was talking him up today. It was different from her usual ass-chewings... but he appreciated it. "That? Oh, that was nothin' but the truth. Nothin' special about that. I'd tell ya that any day of the week. And I make the time because it's worth talkin' to ya."

Maybe he'd just hold off a bit longer on that sip. The coffee was making the room a little warm.

"Besides, if I don't keep an eye on you, lord knows what sort of trouble you'd get into, Sly One."

She laughed at that, flicking her fingers at him in mock disgust, "Cold feet are awful," she allowed, "But nothing beats being snuggled up against someone and being held while you sleep." for a brief moment her expression was a little wistful, but she quickly snapped out of it and rolled her eyes, "Not that I would really know of course, being SlySky." and she poked her little pink tongue out at him.

Childish? Why yes, so what.

"Aw aren't you sweet, I...I think I can feel a tear.." and she mock dramatically brushed away an imagined tear before grinning at him broadly. "Dear Leo, I don't get into trouble. I create trouble."

Leonard was man enough to admit that even with specialized training in Psychology, some things could get past him. Perhaps when like spoke to like, it helped things along. Regardless, he caught that little wistful look and something in him smiled back in sympathy through his eyes. Before he could do anything -- what, he had no damn clue -- things changed. And he was recipient of the most precious raspberry he'd ever been graced with.

She'd earned the deep belly laugh that came out to surprise the neighbors. And maybe himself.

"Being SlySky, you're above all that anyway. We stupid mortals just don't get it yet," he snorted. "And naw, closer to say you are Trouble. Personified and loose on the ship. I should call Security while I've got you in my sights."

Before he could make good on the threat, the ship's internal comm paged him. Leonard sighed an apology and excused himself to use the wall unit. It wasn't a downright emergency, but the doctor on duty was beside himself. Apparently the patient was Denobulan. Well, yes, ( ... )

She laughed softly and grinned at him, opening her mouth to retort when the comm paged him. As he sighed and moved over to take the communication she watched him fondly. Dear Leo, he really had no idea what a great guy he was and that was a shame. But she knew, and she was sure that eventually he would grow to at least love himself a little bit.

As he came back over she rose to her feet, seeing from his expression that he would be heading off somewhere to deal with something. Sky nodded as he explained and smiled. "Drawback of being a decent Doctor, Doctor." she teased, "And yes, meeting up again is a must, who else will keep Trouble Personified in line if not you? And don't get me started on those meetings, or you'll never leave." she laughed and moved around the table to give him a loose but warm hug. "Stay safe, Leo." she said, stepping back and winking.

"See what charm gets me?" Leonard teased back before getting an armful of Sky. It wasn't quite a surprise, as she was a caring and friendly person that just made you expect nice things like hugs. Given the restraints of their largely professional relationship, they didn't really have the opportunity to indulge in illogical and sentimental Humanisms, to bring up the pointy-eared menace. They'd have to change that. Leonard liked the hugging ( ... )

"It gets you patients who find you indispensible." she said, with a grin, flicking her dark hair back over her shoulder impatiently. She really had to find a way to restrain the thick hair, she thought idly, it just kept getting in her eyes or over her face. "And yes, although seeing the Science Officer try and rant about you being lax in your duties could be entertaining, I would rather you didn't get into trouble. Commander Spock can be a little bit of a pedant at times.

"Brunch sounds good." Sky agreed easily, grinning up at him, "How good are your imagining skills Leo? Cause I am thinking there will be a lovely barbeque waiting for us on Saturday." She was a little sad he was going now, but it was their job and as such nessicary, and besides, Saturday was not that far away.

"Spock's as much of a pedant as his lady a scrapper. No 'little' about it," Leonard smirked. He gently laid a hand on Sky's shoulder, squeezing friendly-like as he began pulling away from her, from his unexpectedly pleasant coffee run. "And I can imagine quite a lot if I've got the right incentive. You promise barbecue and I'll make telepaths twitch for meters away. Saturday it is. Until then, you take care."

He parted with a nod, moving briskly for the door. Not that he didn't want to stay longer too. The Denobulan in question, though, was a persnickety fellow who'd taken a shine to Leonard for no reason he'd ever been able to fathom. But they had plans, and it wasn't like he wouldn't see her around the Department.

Maybe he'd stop in before to mention that report he'd forgotten about.
