His Dark Materials: I've read the first two books. The first one was difficult for me to get into as well, but I did eventually become more interested, and I thought the end was fantastic. The Subtle Knife was a quicker read for me: it wasn't all about Lyra (whom I find annoying) so was a lot easier to get through. As for the third book . . . I haven't read it yet, so I can't really say. I like the series, but it honestly hasn't ever blown me away. But I've heard fantastic things about The Amber Spyglass, so I should really just finish the series and find out.

I'll go back and try again, then. I had trouble getting into S.E. Hinton's stuff as well, so it wouldn't be the first time an author totally swept me away after a mediocre start, but... Eh. We'll see, I guess.

The Golden Compass is definitely the weakest of the three. Once you get past the first couple chapters, though, it gets pretty damn good, and it's SO worth all the reading just to get to The Amber Spyglass, which made me cry all over the place.

The first book is my least favorite of the three. The second book is my absolute favorite.

It takes a while to get into, but it gets better.

It's worth it.
