Jinto was holed up in an empty room, the only place he could think. The ordinary chaos of life on the station, he thought gruffly, was worse than that of battle. Being a supply officer wasn't all that difficult when there was clear lines of communication and you knew who was in charge at any moment ( Read more... )

And that's when an imposingly tall figure walks into the room, his storm coat floating out behind him for a moment like tattered wings.

"Good day. I am looking for the Munitorium Adept.... er, supply officer. Would you know where to find him, young man?"

Jinnto felt an overwhelming urge to run and hide, possibly behind Lafiel, who definitely wore the pants in their relationship. He forced himself to look up from his papers and address this man.

"That's me, I suppose, sir. How can I help you?"

Gaunt smiles at the young man, losing some of the intimidating demeanor which all officers of the Commissariat wear like a second skin.

"I'm trying to ascertain the chances of being able to replicate or gain access to more ammunition for my personal sidearms, should that be required. I trust you can be of some assistance with this?"

Jinnto relaxed slightly but didn't quite let down his guard. Even Admiral Spaurh had smiled sometimes. Mostly when she'd blown up a United Mankind fleet in a particularly clever way.

"What kind of personal sidearms? Energy weapon, slug thrower, or some other kind?"

"So yer the one who's tryin' ta organize everythin'," Tess says from the doorway, her hands on her hips. The form-fitting suit makes her quite the striking figure.

Jinto looked up from his paperwork to see a beautiful lander girl, standing framed in the doorway.

"It's the only way I can really make myself useful." He said, almost apologetic.

"Well, yer doin' somethin', and that's better'n half the folk round here." She steps inside, glancing around. A lander she might be-the open faceplate confirms that-but enough subtle details of the suit point to something designed for use in space. "They ain't anything like complete, but I can forw'd you somma the lists I got." (That accent...)

Jinto does indeed wonder where she could possibly be from. But more importantly, he stares at her suit a bit.

"Thank you. I'd really appreciate it. To tell the truth, i'm afraid things aren't looking too great..."

"Here's another list of things we've pulled out of the flight lanes," Ai said. Truthfully, she was glad someone was being organized about things -- someone beside 'whatever free time engineering could throw at the problem', which was mostly 'scribble on a napkin when you see something useful, and hope no one uses it to mop up coffee'.

Most of the list was 'unknown thing' or 'metallic object that might be a tool', or 'we took a vote and it's probably for food preparation'. At least they could make a guess about whether they could be melted down for something.

Inwardly, Jinto groaned. This meant more work, most of it guessing. He hated guessing.

Outwardly though he looked up from his lists and smiled. People had gone through the trouble of trying to help him. That deserved some gratitude. "Oh, that should help. Thank you miss..."

"Tanabe. Tanabe Ai -- Ai's my personal name, Tanabe is my family name." Maybe she should have given it the Western way, since he didn't look Japanese, but it was so hard to guess how people would take a name here.

"Front wing flyer Lynn Syu Dru Rock Haidr Jinnto, but you can call me just Jinnto." The Abh were big on titles and retained the Japanese naming order of their origins. The sound of it tickled something in the back of his memory, actually. He couldn't place her origins but had a feeling he should. "You're part of engineering here, right?"
