It's been years since I've read Anansi Boys, but I remember it being disappointing after American Gods, since the latter was a fairly formative book for me.
Have you read Stardust? It took me a few tries to get past the first part, but then I couldn't put it down.
Yeah, I really enjoyed American Gods and I thought since Anansi Boys had a lot of the same themes I might enjoy it as much. But it felt like hard work to read. I just didn't like anyone in it.
I feel like I probably have read Stardust, possibly when much younger, but I don't remember reading it. I have watched the film though and that was a lot of fun, so I think I might pick it up at some point.
I admit, Neil Gaiman is one of those authors I kind of really want to like, but it often seems like he's trying too hard? I read Good Omens first, and after that it seemed to me like he was trying to copy/emulate Terry Pratchett's brand of whimsical worlds and snarky amusement. I did like American Gods though, and I'm fairly certain I tried reading Anansi Boys and didn't get very far... I feel like I picked all the wrong things.
My brother seems to love everything Neil writes though. I feel I should learn to.
I get that as well sometimes, that he's trying too hard, or that he really wants things to be clever or unexpected, but they just don't come across that way to me. But he does have some interesting ideas, I'll give him that. I think it's easier if I ignore the whole 'it's Neil Gaiman' thing and just judge his stuff on whether I enjoy it or not.
I love Terry Pratchett and I know people that can't stand his writing style, they just don't find him funny at all. Opinions wouldn't be so opinion-y if they were all the same I guess.

lol, I'm sure if we started comparing we'd find something you love that I hated, that would balance everything out.
