This sounds rather cool, I may have to purchase that when I buy the second volume of Hawkeye xD
I had picked up IQ84 and was going to have it as my 'based on another continent' book, but I have since learned that there isn't as much focus on alternate realities as I thought, and that it becomes a bit skeezy, so now I rather regret buying it and don't want to read it :/ (also, from the chapter I have read it's really drawn out and has a lot of focus on things I can just tell are going to be completely unimportant...)
I really enjoyed it, I'm reccing it to everyone I know. Originally I was just going to read something set in the US, but I wanted something a bit different.
That's a shame, I had a quick look and that actually sounds twisty and interesting. It's so disappointing when a synopsis full of potential turns out to be a terrible book. I was recently disappointed by Mayhem by Sarah Pinborough, which seemed to promise something subtle and sinister, and had some creepy ideas, but very little happened and the characters felt a bit uninteresting (I found the fact that it used mostly real people, and real crimes, in its story kind of neat though.)
It is added to my list xD I want to do something aside from US novels also for that square as the books I read are often US-based or like an alternate version of the US.
It definitely sounds interesting from the synopsis, I thought it was going to be a lot more 'involved' I guess. But I read (perhaps mistakenly?) people's thoughts on Goodreads and a lot of people were saying how there was potential that wasn't met, and how there's a lesbian scene purely for guys and not because the main female character has any attraction towards women, and it has zero importance to the plot and IDK it just put me off. I think essentially it's supposed to be an epic love story in the end and just meh.
Yes, I felt like US novels weren't different enough from stuff I normally read. So Yamada was kind of perfect when it popped up on my list. Which is nice, since sometimes Amazon recs me nothing but rubbish, or books from the middle of a series - honestly why is it reccing me book 5 in some series I've never seen before??
Negative book reviews, I find, can sometimes be more helpful than positive ones, if I'm undecided. Because if they point out stuff I don't enjoy reading like tons of misogyny, or no plot resolution at all, I can go 'ah, I probably wouldn't like it.' The Amazon feature where you can read the first few pages is helpful too. A couple of times I've been turned off by a horrible writing style (and once I found something to be in second person, which I can never get a grip on.)
