I read the sequel first, assumed it was the first book for some reason, and liked it. *Then* I read the first book and OMG what a downer - sooo long-winded. Now I'm not sure if the second book was actually better than the first. He just didn't explain everything that had already happenend so it felt slightly less long-winded and kept me interested. Actually I can't remember if I read the third ...

I've done that before, which usually ends up with me being very confused about stuff they don't clarify. But if it's a good book anyway then it's usually still a good, if confusing, book if you accidentally fall in the middle of the series.

I think the third one comes out this year. I had to check to make sure it was actually a trilogy, and not a book series that just went on forever with no end.

It didn't feel super long, it just felt like it was all gearing up to something - and that something turned out to be the sequel.
