Oh man, I'm sorry that whole conversation happened. >< It makes it even worse that it's your family. I wish I could offer sage advice, but I got nothin'. *helpless expression* I think your refusal to restart the conversation with your mom was the smart thing to do. I know I never mention my job around certain people unless they specifically ask about it. *sigh*
Oh man. I remember when we used to complain about our mothers' hatred for all things anime and manga back in college. It makes me so sad that they still act like that.
For her birthday my mom made me give her the gift of "volunteering somewhere." Then she got mad when I tried to volunteer at an animal shelter instead of a place with people so I would stop being such a hermit. And I admit that my social life in LA isn't amazing, but I haven't found anyone I've really hit it off with here. :<
At least I can get my mom to pick up a manga now. If it has my name in it. That's progress...
I just don't get how they can be so… thick-headed about it! Sometimes I swear my mom would be more accepting of me if my habits were things like constantly getting drunk or smoking pot. @_@
But… there are still PEOPLE at the animal shelter!! And come on, animals are WAY cuter than most people! I would volunteer at an animal shelter rather than any other thing 9 times out of 10.
Oh! That's so cool! My mom is still under the impression manga carries the plague (unless I'm around her and she's talking about my job, then she seems… sort of proud? But rarely, if ever, when it's just me and her). My dad is getting much more accepting though! When the first volume of X was delivered, he went through it with me and discussed my work. That was really nice.
Your mother seems bizarrely immature, though. "You don't talk about anything I like to talk about" sounds more like a bad high school date than a mature woman talking to her daughter...
I guess in the future just try not to say the A-word in her presence, even if it means leaving your stories without proper context. It seems obvious at this point that it just sets her off for whatever reason.
She IS bizarrely immature! But in her mind, I'M the immature one because comics and cartoons are for children only or something… At least I'm open to things I'm not necessarily interested in, mother!!
That probably is the best course of action… ugh… ~_~
And I shouldn't blame the plants! I actually rather like plants, I'm just so tired of her going on and on and on about them when my interests are somewhat taboo. I miss the days when I could say, "that's a pretty flower" and didn't get the history and genetic makeup of the flower. It's interesting information most of the time, but sometimes I just want to enjoy a flower because it's pretty.

You're a successful, level-headed person with a good heart; what more does your mom want?
