The main thing with hiking shoes and boots is ankle support because walking on non-flat surfaces (as you probably found out) means that's it's a lot easier to roll your ankle and in that case, it's nice to have something there supporting it.
But yeah, you don't have to. I know people who've been backpacking for 40 years wearing Converse All-Stars the whole time (not the same pair).
Those Hedge trips to Yosemite are some of my favorite childhood memories! We stayed in cabins just like that in Curry village... and I totally remember those hikes. Thanks for describing the hike up Half Dome; I've always wondered how people do it, and now I know. I'm so envious; that looked like a lot of fun, albeit, totally terrifying.
