In Arizona, having a valid AZ driver's license is proof enough.

I live in AZ and I've read the entire 1070 and am pretty damn sure that it isn't worthy of using the word "Nazi" in any discussion regarding it.

Also, there is going to be actual training for the local P.D.s, county (sheriff's dept) and state (DPS) law enforcement on how to act in accordance with 1070. Yes, some cops are assholes, but in my experience, the majority here in AZ are not.

I use Nazi in the "show me your papers" Gestapo style. I think it was a valid comparison.

Let's assume for a moment that the AZ license can be used as proof of citizenship, what if someone from California is visiting? That is not proof of citizenship. Many "legal aliens" have a license. And to boot, I am not certain that the AZ license is proof. I know many Indians (from India) who come here for school and get a drivers license. I am certain that is possible in AZ as well. Therefore, it is no longer proof.

My problem with the law is that it is aimed at anyone who looks illegal, a la Hispanic. The Federal law is aimed at anyone entering this country illegally, not a specific group of people. That makes DB1070 racist by definition.

And to prove it is not racist, who will they be asking for "papers" from? Me? That is doubtful. How about a Canadian bloke visiting the state? I really doubt that two. Maybe that dark-skinned fellow with the accent? Probably. Having brown skin and having an accent does not mean you are

The AZ license isn't proof of citizenship, it's proof of being in Arizona legally. The law isn't concerned with citizenship, but with legal presence in AZ.

A California drivers license is proof (AFAIK) that someone is in the US legally.

"My problem with the law is that it is aimed at anyone who looks illegal, a la Hispanic."

I'm trying to be kind to you since you've been my LJ friend for a few years, but what you've said here is just plain ignorant.

There is nothing in the law aimed at Hispanics. If a driver can only produce a Mexican drivers license, then they should be asked what sort of permit do they have to be in the USA. That isn't racist, it is merely an enforcement of the law.

Indians get an H1-B visa, that they are required to present upon demand.

I don't think it is unreasonable nor racist for us to ask people to respect our immigration laws

I've got 40% of America dissing my state right now, I really don't care to read about it on my LJ friends list. Take care.

Agreed - and it can't be said enough. One of the things I've always loved about our country and our constitution is that it applies to everyone here. This xenophobia that's becoming so accepted lately, and the way it's used to remove our freedoms, it just drives me crazy.
Thanks for posting.
