Grand Canyon flooding

Hundreds of residents and campers are evacuated by helicopter after heavy rains in the Grand Canyon, including one private boating party of 16. No injuries have been reported.

echoweaver and her husband are on a rafting trip in the Grand Canyon. It sounds like their vacation may have gotten a lot more exciting than they bargained for. I'm hoping they turn ( Read more... )

Woo. I've been meaning to post and let everyone know I'm OK. But it actually took a while for me to realize just how big this got in the national news.

We were in the middle of it. My boat was personally first contact with that stranded party of 16. We gave them all the water and snacks we could (they'd literally lost all their supplies) and waited for the NPS helicopter to come. Man -- watching a helicopter fly down into the canyon is amazing; my pictures don't really capture it.

But we were never personally in danger; we just got rained on, which was itself kind of cool.

I'll post in more detail on my own LJ when I get my act together.

Heh. They were on an email I sent out in the morning, when I realized how big the news had hit. I called them yesterday afternoon.
