In October, a third year ALT in the next town over called me, randomly, and asked if I would like to be the judge for an English conversation contest in the next town over to the other side. Overall, I think that their responses are wonderful. It's nice to see people who don't hate this country.

And don't think of how little Japanese you know when you're over there, think of how much Japanese you know comparatively when you're over here. Besides, you went into this program with much less preparation than some people and you're doing wonderfully. And nothing you say will convince me otherwise.

Looking forward to the 26th!

Sounds from the essays like you had your work cut out for you. Also, you should not feel guilty because not only did your questions sound easy, but 15 out of 27 got the prize. That's more than half. That's not a competition! You did fine, dear, just fine. I can't believe you had to read through all those essays and pic pertinent questions and all that crap. Ah well, you probably made some great contacts within the program. And, even if you did sound like a foreigner reading japanese in front of those people, that's what you are, so it's OK. The kids will see just how good you were at speaking japanese when they get here, and hear people going GO Neitchze WA!

No props? I even read some of the ones you posted and helped come up with [I'm sure] questions [that you had to rephrase or throw away]. Heh. I'm-a just kidding! :-}

Good stuff, though! Glad to hear it went "swimmingly".
