Emma was not capable of resisting some of her questionable or criminal actions from the past. And even Rumpel was capable of decent and wise decisions when he was "the Dark One".

The two of them have different personalities and experiences in life so I wouldn't compare both of them since we haven't seen anything except that comic con sequence of Emma being the Dark One.
I don't think there's a point analyzing and concluding that Rumpel was a better person being the Dark One because once again, when you're the Dark One technically you're not a person but a monster; so Emma is right there when she says: "But they said you were a monster? " and she replies "Only on the inside."

Oooh! I'm excited! Also, some of what you said and the comment above made me think, for some reason, of Regina. Regina was never the dark one. She *chose* to be evil. If being the Dark One involves a struggle, it just interested me to think of someone who made that choice on her own.

(btw, I got to your journal from a link on a OuaT community.)

That's great.
And hell yeah, Regina is probably going to be the new savior and I think she'll need time to really comprehend what it means to be the savior.

I just thought you might wonder why some random person came to your journal.

During the first season, I rolled my eyes every time they said "savior." I don't like "chosen one" plots or whatever. But I really like what they're doing with. That Emma is the savior not because she was "chosen" but because every curse can be broken and Rumple designed it for her to break and that it's not a winner take all or one size fits all thing. And yeah, I agree/hope that it will be Regina this time around. I love what the show says about good and evil and how her character developed.

Being a monster doesn't mean you stop being a person.

Rumpel had arranged for Emma to break that first curse, the one cast by Regina. That's it. The moment she achieved that, Emma ceased being "the Savior".
