On Tolerance...

Jun 05, 2011 15:35

I've noticed this surge of blogs and online rants that threatens one of the things I hold dearest to me: Comedy. That thing, is intolerance.

We normally associate that word to those who discrimminate against people of other ethnicities or of sexual orientations that differ from theirs. Rarely do we see it be associated to the so-called open-minded ( Read more... )

this is why i don't have any friends, internet

AGREED.

I feel is better to just don't "feed the trolls" that want to make others feel bad for liking something said "trolls" don't...like people have to agree and/or like the same things or else it is the worse thing ever, it seems they like to pick on people to made themselves important, IMHO.

Sometimes is because people feel "safe" to say bad things over the internet and not have to "face" the people they are attacking.

Such a sad thing that when there should be more acceptance, there seems to be quite the opposite.

Btw, love your "busy" icon...that Jeff/Shirley/Annie scene is one of my favorites, EVER (and the outtake of that scene with Joel smiling at the camera...precious and priceless)

THANKS.

I'm not talking just about the trolls here tho. I mean people in general, especially those who like taking every social happening and turning it into an issue. Kind of like, Brittas :P
(again, I'm not saying you shouldn't care about stuff, I'm saying that it would be in the best interest of everyone, including you, to be a little bit more tolerant of other people's life persectives).

And LOL, yes. I'd too be busy inspecting Joel's chest XD

I will tell you that the only thing I've learned from those has been that nothing worthwhile can come from an online argument. Want to know where these come from? Intolerance.

I agree so fucking much. Intolerance and anger wrongly channelled. :P

There is no need to perpetuate these eternal angry rants over things that really don't matter in the bigger spectrum of real life.

Well, you gotta admit that, for some people, certain issues are really very important in their lives, such things may be fundamental for them. So while I agree that arguing on line is pointless, I still think it's up to everyone to decided which things matter in their lives. :)

Other than that, I agree. Especially with social issues. The discussions is often done at a very superficial level, lacking all academic rigour, which annoys me a lot. It's precisely the lack or rigour, in my humble opinion, that creates so many misunderstandings and endless, pointless discussions.

Ugh, loved this entry so much! I'm worried about the PC-ness being forced upon us on a daily basis. I am all for free speech, and for realizing that freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences that may come from what words we say. At the same time, I feel like the ability to be honestly funny is being compromised by organizations who attack every single word that comedians or other public figures may say. It's insulting to my intelligence to be told that certain words are offensive. I KNOW they are offensive when used in the context of offending someone... but when being used to make a point, or when being used in humor or jest, I can't imagine how they can be that hurtful. Of course, maybe that makes ME ignorant. I'm not sure.

Thanks for putting in words something that has been bugging me for a while! :)

Oh! And I was going to say something brilliant about zero tolerance policies in schools being carried over to a general attitude of zero tolerance for people not being offended by things online... but I forgot what it was. :)
