rampagingfrodo and I saw the latter day "True Grit" this past Sunday. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a Coen brothers fan so I admit I am biased, but I thought their version surpassed the original in many ways. Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon were outstanding, but Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie just blew me away. I loved the 19th century elocution. Not dissimilar to Ian McShane as Al Swearengen's almost Shakespearean diction in "Deadwood" but without the profanity.

The 19th century elocution is straight from the book. I read the book after I saw the first movie, many years ago, and was amused by the tone and high vocabulary of all of the characters in it. No contractions in that world, apparently :-) I agree with your assessment of the Coen brothers, and of course their being local boys done good only helps them in my personal universe.
