It might depend on the admin duties. Being a successful scientist actually requires a lot of management skills, which they don't teach you in grad school. Dealing with people, eliciting cooperation, keeping track of details, making deadlines, time management, project management--it's all tied in together. I learned it as I went along so it wasn't a difficult transition from an external pov. Internally, it entails a shift in self-concept. Hardest for me, probably, is losing focus and having to multitask. Also, having the sense that nothing big is ever finished.
