[ She's in a pretty good mood compared to usually, so it doesn't take much for her to talk about it. ]

It was inside my present. It's a picture.

Of my family. I haven't seen them in a very long time, even before I came to this place.

[ She turns the photo frame around to show it to the camera, revealing a family picture. ]

I don't think I really get the new year thing. We don't have that back home, we have a birthday which is a new year.

A birthday is more for an individual. This 'new year thing' is a sort of universal standard of keeping count of the time.

Man, there is so much culture I just don't get around here.

It's just that apparently many people here share a similar sort of culture. Although celebrating a new year isn't quite the same here as back home. The firework made it interesting.
