I don't think I really get the new year thing. We don't have that back home, we have a birthday which is a new year.

A birthday is more for an individual. This 'new year thing' is a sort of universal standard of keeping count of the time.

It's just that apparently many people here share a similar sort of culture. Although celebrating a new year isn't quite the same here as back home. The firework made it interesting.
