----------
They didn’t know she cried at night. No one really believed that, to Rachel Berry, anything mattered, anything other than music. Little did they know how wrong they were. It was the exact opposite. Because of music, she wore her heart on her sleeve. She seemed to feel things more than most people did. She gave her heart so easily, because she believed the best in people. And when they proved her wrong - Jesse being the latest one to do it - she cried. Not in front of everyone, but she did. She could feel her heart breaking, but she refused to stop believing in the goodness of people.

Which was why she was now standing in front of Quinn Fabray’s hospital room. She could never understand why she kept going back to Quinn, no matter how much the blonde refused to accept her friendship. Somehow, she felt like this was her biggest challenge. If she could find a way to get through to her, if she could get the ex-cheerleader to show her vulnerable side, then she could keep believing. After all, it’s easy to see the good in people when that’s all you’ve ever seen of them. But she had been on the receiving end of Quinn’s bad side for years now. Still, she refused to accept the person she wanted everyone to see was the real Quinn.

The small brunette knocked softly when she reached the half open door, whispering a careful hey, still not sure of she should be there. She was relieved, but also surprised, when the blonde said hi back, with a tired smile.

“I… I’m sorry I couldn’t come with everyone else. I mean, I needed to…” she fidgeted her fingers, simply because she didn’t know what else to do with herself at the moment. No reason seemed acceptable now for not being there a few hours ago. “I mean, Vocal Adrenaline was…”

“It’s ok,” Quinn whispered with a sigh, closing her eyes.

“You seem tired. I can… I can go if you want me to,” she pointed to the hall, still standing on the doorway, halfway in, half out.

The lack of certainty on the Rachel’s voice was a first, and that earned another smile from the blonde, a bit more relaxed now. “Don’t be silly, come in. I promise I won’t slush you, I’m too tired for that,” her words lacked the venom they once had, a clear playful tone instead.

Rachel then got closer to the bed, nervously sitting on the chair which was placed right next to it. “They told me you’re doing well, and so is the baby. That’s good,” her words were measured.

Quinn nodded. “Yes, she’s perfect.” Despite her efforts, one single tear fell, and was quickly wiped away.

“Of course she is,” Rachel replied honestly and matter-of-factly, causing yet another smile to brighten Quinn’s face. The brunette couldn’t help noticing it was the third time in a few minutes that she’d had that effect on her quasi friend, and it made her feel happier than she thought it would.

“So… do you need anything?” she asked tentatively, “Some water, food?”

The young mother simply shook her head. “My mother’s here. She just went home to get some things, but she’s been bringing me things all day. I think she’s trying to make up for everything,” she laughed, but there was a hint of sadness on it.

“You’re going home with her when you’re discharged?” Rachel almost regretted asking the question, deeming it too personal. She soon relaxed when Quinn replied with ease.

“I guess so,” she hesitated, as if unsure she should say the next part, but finally decided to speak, “she even offered to turn one of the rooms into a nursery so that…” she took a deep breath and whispered the last part, “she said she’ll help me with the baby if I want to keep her.”

“Do you… do you want to keep her?”

“More than anything in the world,” came the unexpected response, and Rachel’s eyes immediately found Quinn’s. She could almost see the girl’s struggle to utter the next words. “But I can’t. It’s not fair. She deserves better than that.”

“For someone so confident, you should trust yourself a bit more.”

“It’s not me I don’t trust…” she started, but failed to continue.

That was when Rachel realized it, she could almost read it in Quinn’s eyes. “It’s your mother,” she whispered, and had the confirmation when the other girl nodded.

“She wants me back now, so she’ll say anything to get me back home. But who knows how she will be tomorrow? Next month? Five years from now? There is no way I can risk my girl’s entire future on a promise she’s making in a moment like this.”

Rachel’s head went up and down in a slow nod, and she felt, to her surprise, her own cheek wet with a few tears. “You’re already the best mom that girl could have. You’re making an impossible decision to make sure she will be happy. Even if you’re not.”

“I may be blond, Rachel, but even I know she will be better off with someone else. It’s not that hard.”

Both girls laughed, and then there was silence. It wasn’t weird, though, it was completely comfortable. Rachel reveling in the fact that Quinn had called her by her first name probably for the first time. Ever. Quinn wondering how on Earth she was spilling her guts to Rachel Berry so easily when a few hours ago, she couldn’t discuss the subject with Puck or Mercedes. She blamed it on her hormones and exhaustion and was sure she would regret even saying that the next day.

She didn’t.

And, when they met at school and Rachel didn’t even say hi, surely afraid the girl would forget all about her visit and refuse to be friendly to her in public, Quinn knew some things needed to change. She owed it to herself, she owed to her daughter to be a better person.

“Hey, Rachel,” she half yelled through the corridors, and the entire student body seemed to stop talking at once. Rachel turned around slowly, still unsure, until she saw Quinn’s smile as she made her way to her. It wasn’t the Cheerio smile she always had on. It was the same as the ones from the hospital. A real one. “Thank you.” Two words. Two simple words that surprised everyone who was paying attention. And everyone was paying attention. “I’ll see you at Glee,” with another smile, she walked away, leaving Rachel Berry speechless for the first time.

It did pay off to see the best in people. It did pay off to have her heart broken, if it made her stronger and more determined every single time, as long as she could reach out and help at least one person. It was good enough for her.
