It is inverted. The white rose of Yorkshire has it's 5th (or 1st, dependent on your viewpoint) leaf uppermost. There's one on my wall, and I've checked.
I'm sure it is a templar symbol when inverted, as your highly educated friend below this post seems to know a lot more than me! It would make sense, as Death is the card of change, and the crusades brought about huge and far-reaching changes across many countries.
Being dead is change. To start with you're alive - and then you change into being dead.
I have to admit, I don't like the idea of Death meaning change. It's lacks drama. Death means Death - it just doesn't necessarily mean your death. It could be the death of an idea, concept, a relationship, a period in your life. Basically change but with drama.
