Is dismantling oppression enough?

A friend was talking about how it was necessary to dismantle oppression in fields of study (ie English, Sociology, History, etc.) for valuable work to be done, which I agree with. However, I would say it is not merely enough to dismantle oppression, but to open up fields to others ( Read more... )

read spivak's "can the subaltern speak" for an interesting perspective on this (she brings up the idea that it is potentially impossible to "empower the voice of the Other")

Just as it is impossible for us to provide for an unconditional welcoming (or as Derrida prefers to say, "hospitality") to the Other. We are bounded by the laws of the finite, when we are expected to the infinite.

I have yet to read Spivak's essay. Can you gimmie a summary :D
