Andrew wiggin was a smart kid. leaves me to wonder why he didnt realise Graff was his friend right from the beginning.

uhmmm how was Graff his "friend"? He loved him but *nothing* he did was for Ender's benefit as a person it was all for humanity as a whole.

Well first off when the 'tests' aka the new battle room planning came together - Graff's first reaction was that they were too hard, and that the computer was "not famous for it's kindness" or something along those lines...

A friend that is loyal to his responsiblities might be confusing, but a friend still cares through it.

Even though I love Ender's game for perspective, the fact of the matter that he is a child, and that Ender probably was sposed to be still maturing at 'interactions and emotions'... could add to the issue of not being able to see through the treatment.

yes, he was a child. however, if you ask me, the three wiggin children matured intellectually far faster than normal children. but i think the only one who really matured emotionally would be Valentine.
but that was only because she settled down and had kids.

Graff's an expert at manipulating all those genius kids, even Ender.

plus, even if Graff WAS his friend, which is clearly debatable, Ender's experience with betrayal and his treatment at school gave him no reason to believe that Graff was (his friend). I don't think they (the school) WANTED Ender to think of Graff as a friend, and he was probably better off thinking that way. Nothing Graff did/could do until it was all over was friendlike. Because of what was at stake, they could not be friends. It would have jeopardized everything. Ender was correct in considering Graff NOT a friend.

C4C hit it on the nose. Throughout Ender's Game, the characters constantly emphasize that Ender, no matter what the circumstances, must believe that he is utterly alone within the Battle School. If he for even a moment thinks that someone will be there to help him, his strength and resolve would weaken, and he wouldn't be the commander that he eventually became. Graff always had a certain amount of pity for Ender, but he could never be anything more than an officer to him.
