dove_drabbles Prompt No. 123 - Be someone you look up to
Summary: Draco feels he isn't good enough for the Boy Who Lived.
Harry smiled indulgently at his boyfriend. Draco was in the midst of his once-a-week meltdown over their relationship.
"It will never work out in the long run," bemoaned Draco. He cradled his forehead in one hand, elbow resting on the kitchen table, and knocked back a swig of Ogden's with the other.
"Have faith," said Harry, reaching to pluck the glass from Draco's hand. "No one has said anything negative to me. Has anyone been filling your head with nonsense?"
"No." Draco's voice was sullen, and he kept his head bent.
"Then why do you feel we don't stand a chance?"
Draco finally raised his head. "You're you," he said. "The Boy Who Lived, savior of the wizarding world, Saint Potter."
Harry made a 'get on with it' motion. "And?"
"And I'm me. Son of a Death Eater, ice prince, Slytherin bad boy."
"I happen to like that you're a bad boy," Harry murmured, waggling his eyebrows.
A small snort escaped Draco, but a tiny grin quirked his lips. "Git."
"We aren't labels, Draco," said Harry. "We're people. Two people who care for one another, enjoy each other's company, and have an amazing future ahead of us."
Draco slumped back in his seat and crossed his arms, all humor gone from his face. "I don't know how to be that person for you."
"I'm fond of you just the way you are, you know," Harry told him. "If that's not good enough for you, then...I don't know, try to be someone you would look up to. You don't have to emulate one person. Choose certain qualities you admire in different people and strive to adopt them."
Draco pondered his words in silence.
"Don't change for me," Harry implored. "Only embrace some changes if they make you happy."
"I reckon you're right," Draco eventually said. He uncrossed his arms and leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "You're the one I most look up to, you know."
Harry smiled at him. "Yeah? I do have remarkable taste in boyfriends."
"That, you do," Draco said with a haughty lift of his chin. "Now give me back my Ogden's and pour yourself a glass. We have a relationship to toast."
