Summary: What has Neville gotten himself into?
Neville struggled to scramble up the rocky incline behind Charlie. Loose shale gave beneath his foot, and he fell onto one knee. Immediately, a hand clapped over his mouth.
"No loud noises," Charlie whispered. "I know that hurt, but maintain a stiff upper lip."
Charlie's hand withdrew, and Neville muttered, "Sorry."
"You're doing great," said Charlie. "You were willing to come with me to retrieve these eggs. Dragon conservation isn't for those with weak constitutions."
Charlie pulled Neville to his feet. "The clutch is just over this ridge," he said. "You didn't upend the basket, did you?"
"No," said Neville, tightening his grip on the basket he was carrying. They each had one filled with downy feathers to cushion the dragon eggs they planned to retrieve and take to the sanctuary.
"Are you sure the mother dragon is gone?" Neville asked. He was terrified, but he'd resolved to be brave for Charlie's sake.
"She's hunting," Charlie whispered in reply. He crested the ridge and made a soft exclamation of delight.
As Neville was considering joining him, Charlie leaned over and sat back up, a prized dragon egg in hand.
"Here," he said, handing the egg off.
Neville accepted it and placed it gingerly in his basket. Another moment passed and Charlie handed him a second egg.
"How many are there?" Neville asked.
"About a dozen," Charlie replied. "We'll take four and hope mum doesn't notice." After several, agonizing minutes, Charlie began to descend to where Neville waited. His basket also contained two eggs.
"Let's get out of here," Charlie muttered.
They began clambering down the incline, mindful of their precious cargo. They reached the bottom of the hill just as a large shadow passed overhead.
Neville looked up, heart lodging in his throat when the dragon bellowed in rage.
"Run!" yelled Charlie.
Neville didn't have to be told twice. He and Charlie raced for the treeline as the dragon shrieked above them. Once they reached the safety of the trees, Neville collapsed to the ground, panting with fear and exertion. Why had he ever thought this was a good idea?
Charlie whooped in glee and hauled Neville into a torrid snog.
Oh right, that's why...
