Summary: Draco has a potentially life-altering decision to make.

There were flames all around. For once, Draco found himself wishing for the mask he usually wore, but he had lost it...torn away in the battle that had raged outside of Hogsmeade. It was the first time he had been involved in an actual battle during this war, and it had sickened him.

Draco had been raised by his pureblood parents to hate any and all half-bloods and mudbloods, but some of the people whom he had seen die today were people he knew...some were his friends. His parents had told him he needed to be a pillar of pride in the pureblood community, that he needed to marry a pureblood girl and raise a pureblood family. Draco thought he had bought into it, but now...now after seeing what his mother and father meant by establishing a world where only pureblood witches and wizards reigned, he found his belief in them crumbling.

He had begun to realize there was more to life than just pureblood dogma during his years at Hogwarts. It was there that he'd met many students and teachers who were half-bloods and even Muggle born. They weren't stupid or less talented, and they certainly weren't useless, as his parents had led him to believe. One person in particular had captured Draco's attention. One half-blood, Muggle-raised boy had helped to reshape Draco's thinking, even without him realizing it.

Harry Potter.

Draco had found himself captivated by the other boy at an early age, and it wasn't until he was older that he realized what he felt for Potter was actual attraction. He had squelched his feelings, still determined to be the good son and marry a pureblood and produce heirs. But he only felt alive, truly alive in Potter's presence. The Boy Who Lived was like a fire in Draco's blood, causing sparks of awareness to prickle along his nerve endings whenever the Gryffindor was near. The sound of Potter's voice could cause dragons to take flight in Draco's stomach, and his reaction was even more pronounced whenever the other boy was near him.

As Draco looked around him at the smoke and destruction, he found himself wishing that things had been different. Perhaps if he'd been sorted into Gryffindor, or even Ravenclaw, hell anywhere but Slytherin, he may have had a chance to be friends with Potter. He could have been fighting alongside the boy hero instead of against him. Maybe Potter could have helped him change his viewpoint before it was too late...before Draco had taken up his wand and fought with his parents in support of a mad man.

"Draco!" he heard his mother scream from his left. "We have to get away! Come quickly!"

Turning his head, he saw Narcissa standing there in her scorched, bloodstained black robe, and he felt only fear and trepidation at returning home with her. Lucius joined her then, and his icy voice cut across the distance separating them. "Come along, Draco. There isn't much time!"

Draco wavered uncertainly, and another voice rose from the din to his right.

"Malfoy! We can offer you protection, but you have to come away with me now!" yelled Harry Potter.

Filled with a startling hope, Draco turned to look at the boy he'd been raised to hate but somehow couldn't.

As he stood in the middle of a battlefield, his parents calling to him on one side, and Potter beckoning to him on the other, Draco felt as if he were standing on the edge of a great precipice. There was nowhere to go but one side or the other, and when he made that leap, there would be no going back.

"Come on, Malfoy!" coaxed Potter.

"Come away now, Draco, or I shall kill you myself." His father's chilling words carried clearly across the trampled ground, and Draco's decision was made.

Turning to face his parents, he snapped his wand up and yelled, "Expillarimus!" Not waiting to see the results, he whirled, turning his back on his family, and ran to Potter's side.
