Summary: Draco takes radical measures to find his mate.
Harry descended the steps on his way to the Great Hall for dinner, but the sight that met his eyes brought him up short. A blindfolded Draco Malfoy was standing beneath a trellis with several sprigs of mistletoe hanging over his head. Harry was able to recognize him because of his pale hair.
"What is Malfoy doing?" Harry asked Hermione without looking away from Malfoy. As he watched, a young girl sidled up to Malfoy and kissed him before scampering away again.
Hermione drew herself up and prepared to impart knowledge. "As you know, Malfoy came out after the war as a Veela."
"Yes, as did Luna and a handful of other Pureblood students," said Harry. His eyes narrowed when Finch-Fletchley approached Malfoy, pressed a kiss to his lips, and stepped back. When nothing happened, Finch-Fletchley sighed and wandered off again.
"Do you recall what happened when Neville first kissed her in the courtyard?" Hermione prodded.
"She grew wings," Harry replied, smiling brightly at the memory. He'd never seen her look so radiant.
Hermione nodded. "A Veela's wings don't manifest until he or she finds a mate, and then the wings disappear again."
"Wait, is that what Malfoy is doing?"
"Rumor has it he's anxious to find his mate," said Hermione.
Another girl skipped up to Malfoy and kissed him. When no wings appeared, she cheated and kissed him again.
Harry's jaw tightened in irritation. "So, he's going to stand there and let everyone kiss him under the mistletoe?"
"Until he finds his mate, I suppose," Hermione replied. "Let's go in to dinner," she urged tugging at Harry's sleeve.
"Wait," said Harry, digging in his heels. "Don't you want to try your luck?"
Hermione laughed. "Ron would flip his biscuits if I kissed Malfoy." She fastened her shrewd brown eyes on Harry. "Why don't you try it?"
"Me?" cried Harry. He lowered his voice and added, "Malfoy would rather break my nose than accept a kiss from me."
"All the more reason to sneak one past him, if you ask me," teased Hermione.
Harry thought it over. It did seem like a brilliant prank. He dampened his lips with his tongue. Harry turned a stern gaze on his friend. "Don't tell Ron," he cautioned. "I reckon he'd flip his biscuits, whether it was you or me who snogged Malfoy."
"Go on with you then," giggled Hermione. "I'll keep an eye out for Ron."
Harry strode forward confidently, steps slowing the closer he got to Malfoy. He was just doing this to get a leg over his rival, so why was his stomach fluttering in anticipation? Harry stopped directly in front of Malfoy. He had an urge to swipe the pad of his thumb over Malfoy's lips to wipe away the other kisses he'd received. Harry took a deep breath, savoring the other boy's scent, then he leaned in and pressed his lips to Malfoy's parted ones.
Malfoy moaned, so softly that Harry barely heard him. Malfoy kissed him back, surprising Harry with his response. Harry took a hasty step back, mouth falling open in shock as magnificent white wings unfurled behind Malfoy. Harry reached to touch the silky feathers, then seemed to catch himself. Panic set in, and Harry turned and fled back up the stairs.
Harry didn't look back. If he had, he would have seen Malfoy yank off his blindfold, his expression of wonder quickly replaced by confusion and despair.
