hump_day101 Prompt #2 (angst week) - set into motion.
Summary: Lucius Malfoy wants revenge, and he's not above using his son to get it.
Despite the butterflies churning in his stomach, Draco kept a polite smile affixed firmly to his face. Across the table from him, Harry was busy chatting about his day and entertaining Draco with tales of Auror-training horrors. Draco actually enjoyed listening to Harry talk, and that was the problem.
The War was over, and Harry had won. He had even testified at the Malfoys' hearings, and it was for that reason that Draco and Narcissa Malfoy had been spared Azkaban. Lucius Malfoy, however, had not been so fortunate.
Ever the dutiful son, Draco visited his father each week in the imposing prison. Once driven in a quest for power as the Dark Lord's right hand man, Lucius Malfoy had now focused his energy on revenge. He blamed Harry Potter for everything that had gone wrong, including his own incarceration. Lucius had instructed Draco to get close to Potter in a bid to exact retribution for the Malfoys.
Draco had done so, reluctantly at first, but the more time he spent in Harry's company, the more he began to enjoy the task of getting to know him better. Draco lost sight of the fact that he was meant to be wreaking vengeance and lost himself instead in the wonder of Harry Potter. He had been dismayed, therefore, when he'd last visited his father and Lucius had pressured him to destroy Potter.
"How am I to do that without further damaging our name?" Draco had asked. "Surely, it would be better to curry Potter's favor and restore honor to our family in that manner?"
Lucius had been nearly apoplectic, and Draco had been subjected to a lengthy rant from his father. Nothing would satisfy Lucius Malfoy but the utter annihilation of one Harry Potter.
"There is a way, Draco," Lucius had rasped. "Severus had brewed a potion that he assured the Dark Lord would kill Potter and leave no trace. Our lord's desire to look into Potter's eyes as he dealt the killing blow proved to be his downfall, but you will not fail."
"I know of no such potion," Draco had said quickly. His father, however, not only knew where to find the potion, but also described the phial it was kept in. He had instructed Draco to procure it and put it to its intended use. Draco had been horrified, but he wasn't about to let his father guess the true nature of his thoughts. He had left Azkaban that day deeply conflicted. Draco was now torn between duty and devotion to his family and his growing affection and attraction for Harry.
Nevertheless, Draco had located the potion, and he now carried it in his pocket at all times. Draco excused his delay in implementing his father's plan on the need to wait until the perfect opportunity presented itself. He must empty the potion into Harry's drink or food without being caught.
As he nodded and smiled at Harry, Draco slipped a hand into the pocket of his robe and fingered the glass phial. If only Harry would be distracted for a moment, Draco could administer the potion and be done with it. He would avenge the Malfoys while finally earning his father's respect.
Harry glanced up and caught Draco's eye, and Draco caught his breath. He feared that by destroying Harry, he would destroy himself in the process, yet he was reluctant to disobey his father's orders. Lucius Malfoy still wielded power and influence outside of Azkaban's stark walls.
Harry will protect you, Draco thought to himself. Did he dare confess his part in his father's scheme? If he did admit to his machinations and Harry spurned him, Draco would be at the mercy of both Lucius Malfoy and the Ministry.
Draco gave himself a mental shake. He had to put his personal feelings aside for the sake of his family. It was too late to back out now. The plan had been set into motion, and Draco could do nothing but see it through.
