Draco got up very early in the morning to hang his fetish in the doorway to the Great Hall. He'd been told at an early age that he was part Veela, and that he would someday begin pining for his mate. Lately, Draco had been feeling restless and out of sorts until he realized the pining was upon him.
In accordance with how he'd been instructed, Draco had snipped a small piece of cloth from the shirt he had slept in the night before. He then formed it into a small ball before kissing it and tying it with string. Draco glamoured it invisible once he'd placed it in the doorway. Now, only his destined mate would react when he or she came near the fetish.
Draco was too nervous to eat his breakfast. He settled for drinking pumpkin juice and keeping an anxious eye on everyone who entered the Great Hall. Draco's heart skipped a beat when Potter appeared in the doorway, only to hesitate and look around himself in confusion.
No, it couldn't be.
Potter's eyes scanned the room, moving over Draco before snapping back to focus on him. He squared his shoulders and strode toward the Slytherin table.
Draco waited until Potter stopped across from him, and then he panicked and bolted.

Harry blinked in surprise as Malfoy scrambled from his seat and fled. He'd only wanted to talk to the Slytherin, not start a fight. Harry's first thought was to let Malfoy go, but all of his instincts were driving him to go after the other boy. Without stopping to think, Harry followed.
Compelled by something he didn't understand, Harry made his way to the covered bridge that spanned a narrow section of the Black Lake. Malfoy was there, leaning against the rail and looking at the calm water below. He looked up at Harry's approach.
"Go away, Potter. I can't deal with this right now."
Harry paused a safe distance from Malfoy. "You can't deal with what?" he asked.
"Don't tell me you don't feel it," said Malfoy. "How did you find me here?"
Harry hesitated, unsure of the answer. It was as if he'd been...
"Drawn to me, were you?" Malfoy challenged. At Harry's reluctant nod, Malfoy clenched his hands into fists and bowed his head.
"What aren't you telling me?" Harry pressed him.
Malfoy sighed. "I'm a Veela, Potter, and you're my mate."

When his statement was met with silence, Draco raised his head to look at Potter. Rather than appear revolted or even surprised, Potter's expression was contemplative.
"It would certainly explain a lot," he mused.
"What do you mean?" Draco asked him, voice wary.
Potter's face reddened, but he met Draco's eyes boldly as he replied, "I've been attracted to you for some time."
Hope fluttered in Draco's heart, yet still he felt obligated to voice his doubts. "There's a huge difference between being attracted to someone and being his soulmate."
"I reckon you're right," Potter grinned, "but I'm willing to explore the difference if you are."
Draco felt an answering grin trying to bloom, but he managed to rein it in. No sense in looking like an idiot. "I...I'd like that, yeah," he said.
"Fantastic," beamed Potter. "Do you, um, would you like to meet in the library after classes today for a...a study date?"
Potter was rather adorable when he stammered and blushed, but Draco let him off easy. "That would be wonderful," he said.
"Brilliant! I'll see you later."
Draco waited until Potter rushed away before he allowed himself a relieved smile. He had found his soulmate and been accepted by him. Now all he had to do was put up with Slytherin sneers, Gryffindor glares, the disapproval of their professors, and face the wrath of his parents. "Oh, Merlin," Draco groaned. "What have I gotten myself into?"
